December 2010 Newsletter
Dear Friend,
I am asking you to be bold, involved, visionary and resilient in 2011. Hold an image of yourself as energized and powerful, filled with love and goodwill. Stay with that image for a minute… We are facing the need to create a Civilization of Love as written about in 7 Keys to Love, p.111…
“We need to quickly transform humanity and the planet … let us gather with others interested in global transformational co-creation…let us join forces and collaborate more powerfully. How do we build a ‘civilization of love’? How do we defeat the culture of death? How do we confront hatred, neglect, and egotistical individualism? As utopian as it may sound, we build a ‘civilization of love’ by loving one another constantly and intensely. As Peter said:
Since you have
purified yourselves by obedience
to the truth for sincere mutual love,
love one another intensely from a (pure) heart.
—1 PETER 1:22
We need to encourage each other daily to help in small ways to create a ‘civilization of love.’ As hatred makes us isolated, it is through solidarity of love that we can fully participate in life, in our communities, and calling for transformation nationally and globally.”
No matter what your religion, please carry the social and spiritual Gift of Christmas ~ The Gift of Love, Kindness, Compassion and Goodwill that Jesus of Nazareth espoused with you all year. Below are the teachings of Jesus about love and thoughts on love from the visionary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr..
Lots of Love,
Sandy Hinden
Jesus on Love
Jesus of Nazareth was a master transformational change agent – agitating and confronting the “old rule book” as he saw it. We need to do this with the present “rule book” – the economic-social-political-environmental paradigm that is destroying our beautiful planet.
For Jesus, Love for God and other people, is the highest expression of harmony with God. Thus, for followers of Jesus, to be a true Christian is to be like Christ, who "went about doing good" (Acts 10:38). True Christians, then, are those who, in the spirit of Jesus, go about doing good to all who need their help and assistance. Today our communities and youth are under siege with drugs and guns, humanity is growing faster than employment, and consumerism is ravishing nature. We need a wiser, more loving civilization. Please stay involved! We need you!!!

“A new commandment I give unto you,
That ye love one another;
as I have loved you,
that ye also love one to another.”
John 13:34
“And we have known and believed
the love that God hath to us.
God is love;
and he that dwelleth in love
dwelleth in God,
and God in him.”
1 John 4:16
“If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar:
for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen,
how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
And this commandment have we from him,
That he who loveth God love his brother also.”
1 John 4:20,21
“If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture,
Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well.“
James 2:8
“Love is patient; love is kind
and envies no one.
Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude;
never selfish, not quick to take offense.
There is nothing love cannot face;
there is no limit to its faith,
its hope, and endurance.
In a word, there are three things
that last forever: faith, hope, and love;
but the greatest of them all is love.”
1 Corinthians 13

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Love
Dr. King went on to preach the value of love and work tirelessly with a vision of the Beloved Community. Dr. King’s method of non-violent social change and the Beloved Community can be read about in 7 Keys to Love, Chapter 5, on Platonic, Altruistic (Community) Love. “Learning from the work of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. popularized the term ‘Beloved Community’, first expressed in the early twentieth century by the founder of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Josiah Royce.
Dr. King’s Beloved Community is a global vision in which love and trust win out over hatred and fear. Cooperation is nurtured through friendly action. Discrimination and intolerance give way to a spirit of inclusion and appreciation. Personal and international disputes dissolve through commitment to nonviolence, peaceful conflict-resolution, and reconciliation of adversaries. The cycle of retributive violence gives way to lasting peace through reconciliation and healing. Peace with justice prevails over war and military conflict, and poverty, hunger, and homelessness are ended. The wealth of the earth is shared. This is the vision of the ‘Beloved Community’ envisioned by Josiah Royce and Martin Luther King, Jr. and millions of their followers today.” |
“At the center of non-violence
stands the principle of love.”
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness;
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate;
only love can do that.”
“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it.
Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it.
Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.”
“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love
will have the final word in reality.
That is why right, temporarily defeated,
is stronger than evil triumphant.”
“Returning violence for violence
multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness
to a night already devoid of stars...
Hate cannot drive out hate:
only love can do that.”
“Man must evolve
for all human conflict
a method which rejects revenge,
aggression and retaliation.
The foundation of such a method
is love.”

7 “Love Care” Skills for Couples
If you wanted to drive and maintain a car safely and enjoyably, it would be good to learn the skills need to drive, and what to do when a repair is necessary.
Like Car Care and Health Care …
Sometimes relationships need maintenance and repair.
Sometimes relationships feel like you were in a crash.
I n writing 7 Keys to Love I had discovered that:
50% of first marriages fail
60% of second marriages fail
70% of third marriages fail
50% of the remaining couples don’t make love any more
I then identified 7 Love Skills.
Please practice the 7 Love Skills to maintain a thriving, healthy, loving relationship.

To heal our personal and work relationships,
our communities, and, ultimately, the world…
Dr. Judith Alstadter is a concert pianist, music educator and workshop/retreat clinician who taught at Five Towns College, Long Island, New York and teaches at Eckerd College Institute of Life-long Learning, St. Petersburg, Florida. She wrote this about 7 Keys to Love:
Sandy Hinden has written an amazing, powerful, compassionate, and important book for our times! I have been awed, inspired, encouraged, and enlightened by the diversity of his knowledge, experience, and insights.
He has produced a masterful, practical, and essential work on Love in all its aspects as a force for Healing in the world. He has shown that through healing ourselves first through Love, we can go on to heal our personal and work relationships, our communities, and, ultimately, the world.
Sandy Hinden has combined a deep understanding of psychology and spirituality with a practical hands-on methodology for how to do this. The years of dedication he has given to work in the areas of world peace, ecology, and non-violent communication has culminated in this wonderful work.
The title “7 Keys to Love: Opening Love's Door to Joy & Wellbeing” truly describes what can happen when we implement these keys.
The Workshops he offers to put these teachings into practice ourselves, in families, in relationships, and in communities are great tools that need to be given around the country and world in schools, churches, community centers, prisons, hospitals, etc..
I am re-reading the book and have ordered ten copies to give to friends and colleagues!
